Women In Construction Week - 'Together We Rise'

SWW Marketing

Did you know just 15.8% of those working in construction are women?

Whilst that is a damning statistic, improving diversity and inclusion can bring a wealth of untapped skills to the industry. As the construction industry continues to evolve, so does its image. Women are increasingly stepping into roles across the sector, from site managers to business owners, and they’re reshaping the way we think about construction. Yet, while their numbers grow, outdated stereotypes persist, and representation remains a work in progress.

Working closely with the construction and manufacturing industries gives us at SWW a unique perspective on how they operate. We get to see firsthand the incredible contributions women make, from leading projects to driving innovation and contributing their expertise to the industry. This Women in Construction Week, we’re taking the time to celebrate their achievements and reflect on how we can all continue to support and empower women in the industry.

At SWW, we’re proud to be a largely female team, working in an industry that has been traditionally dominated by men. While challenges remain, we’ve seen firsthand how there are opportunities for women to thrive, lead, and make meaningful contributions. To mark Women in Construction Week, we asked our team members to share what being a woman in this industry means to them.

Issy, Senior Marketing Executive

“Being part of this industry has shown me just how under-appreciated and modest the construction industry is. There’s so much skill, creativity, and hard work that goes into every project, and a lot of it happens behind the scenes without much recognition. I’ve come to really appreciate how much hard work goes into this industry, and it’s amazing to be part of something that plays such a huge role in building everything around us.

What I love most about being part of this industry is how every day brings something different. The variety of projects and the different companies we get to work for means that no two days are ever the same. You meet so many people with different expertise and perspectives, and it’s a constant opportunity to grow and develop.”

Jordan, Senior Account Manager

“This year’s WIC week theme, “Together We Rise,” is a reminder that no one evolves alone. True progress happens when we support, include, and make space for each other. Equality in the industry isn’t about one gender being better than the other; it’s about choice, autonomy, and opportunity for all. It’s about creating a space where talent, ambition, and passion aren’t constrained by outdated expectations of what a man or a woman ‘should’ do. I've felt lucky enough to work with clients who welcome us into the industry with open arms, but it's important to acknowledge that isn't everyone's experience and the more we share awareness of that, the more people will adjust their mindset, and behaviour. We want the construction industry to feel like a safe space for all to thrive, no matter their gender."

Bethan, Senior Marketing Executive

“The construction industry is one that still feels relatively new to me. If you’d asked me 18 months ago if I could see myself working in construction, I’d have probably said no. It wasn’t an industry that I felt was made for women and a career path in it was hard to envisage. However, I have been so pleasantly surprised by this incredible industry and feel grateful that I took the plunge to take on a totally different challenge when I started working at SWW last year.

We work with some amazing clients, with a strong presence of both men and women in their teams, and it’s been an extremely rewarding experience to see firsthand how women can make an impact in this industry.”

The future of construction is one where innovation and inclusion go hand in hand. And while challenges remain, it’s clear that there is an opportunity to build an industry that not only values diversity but thrives because of it.
