Construction trends survey results 2020

The results of our recent construction trends survey are in!  We wanted to hear from the industry to understand current challenges and priorities moving forward. Respondents were from businesses within the construction industry serving high value commercial customers, but there were also businesses who worked with the domestic market. Here’s a summary of what we found:


  • 50% of respondents said that their current biggest challenge is generating new leads/business.  A quarter of respondents told us that resourcing and staffing is currently a challenge for them, perhaps due to the pandemic and sick leave.  Over a third told us that obtaining supplies was proving to be a challenge.

  • When asked about corporate social best practices for 2021 and beyond, over a third of respondents told us that supporting their local community was most important to them, followed closely by their environmental responsibility and mental health awareness within the workplace.

  • When asked where new business comes from, every respondent said word of mouth/recommendation was the biggest contributor, followed by Google search results, then print advertising and social media.

  • 60% of respondents said they had a commercial team that included both sales and marketing, 20% had sales representatives only, and 20% had no commercial team at all.

  • 80% said that lead generation was a priority for their business, and 40% said a new or updated website would be the most beneficial marketing channel for their business, followed closely by blogging, then automation and paid advertising.
